People in Loiza
Where is Loiza?
(Photo: People in Loiza dressed up for a festival)

Loiza is on the coast about ten miles east of where we are staying.
It was settled in the 16th century by members of the Yoruba tribe who were brought to the island as slaves from West Africa. Today, Loiza is distinctly Afro-Puerto Rican. It is the center for West-African art, music, dance, cuisine and traditions, such as vejigantes, bomba, and fried food. This 10-miinute video shows some of the food options (and environment) in and around Loiza.

Tomorrow's picture: What is Bomba?
